Dental Implants: About the Process

dental implants alexandria vaDr. Mazhari will explain all aspects of your dental implant procedure during your initial consultation, including the treatment schedule and how to care for your oral health between phases.

For all types of dental implants, the process requires multiple steps taking place over a period of several months. This is to allow for adequate healing of the soft tissues between procedures. If a tooth extraction is necessary, this will be scheduled prior to the implantation of the titanium post in the jaw.

In most cases, the surgical implantation of the titanium post will be completed in our Alexandria, VA dentist office. For more complex cases, you may be referred to a local oral surgeon for treatment.

After about 3-6 moths, or once the bone and soft tissues have healed completely, we will attach the abutment, or connector, for the dental crown which will serve ad your new tooth. This part of the process is a brief office visit, during which a temporary crown may be placed to restore full function. Impressions will be taken to ensure your new crown will fit comfortably and blend with your natural teeth.

The final step in the process is the permanent placement of your new tooth- a custom dental crown. Combined with the implanted post, your new dental implant functions much like a natural tooth and tooth root, supporting your long term oral health.
