Types of Dentures

There are two basic types of dentures, both of which can be removable or fixed:

• A full denture replaces the top or bottom arch of teeth.
• As an alternative to a fixed dental bridge, a partial denture can replace several consecutive teeth.

As another possibility, dental implants offer the option of an implant-supported denture, providing the optimal replacement option for a full denture in a process known as All-on-Four. Dr. Mazhari will determine if you’re a candidate for implant-secured dentures during your initial consultation.

Full and Partial Dentures: What To Expect

Full Dentures

• Evaluation and impressions. Before getting full dentures, you’ll receive a comprehensive evaluation of your oral health and impressions of your gums and jaw to create custom dentures that fit your mouth precisely.
• Tooth extraction (if needed). If you have remaining natural teeth that need to be extracted, your dentist will remove them before fitting you with full dentures. Depending on your specific case, immediate dentures may be placed right after the extractions to provide temporary teeth during the healing period.
• Healing period (if extractions performed). After tooth extraction, you’ll need some time for your gums and jawbone to heal properly before finalizing the dentures.
• Fitting and adjustments. Once your gums have healed, you’ll receive your custom full dentures. Your dentist will ensure they fit comfortably and make any necessary adjustments to achieve a proper fit.
• Adaptation period. It may take some time to get used to wearing full dentures. You may experience slight discomfort or difficulty eating and speaking initially, but these issues should improve as you become accustomed to the dentures.
• Follow-up visits. You’ll need to visit your dentist for periodic check-ups to assess the fit of the dentures and make any adjustments as needed.

Partial Dentures

• Evaluation and impressions. Similar to full dentures, partial dentures require a thorough evaluation and impressions to create custom-made prosthetics that fit comfortably.
• Tooth preparation (if needed). In some cases, your dentist may need to prepare or reshape some of your natural teeth to ensure proper support and stability for the partial denture.
• Fitting and adjustments. Once the partial denture is ready, your dentist will fit it in your mouth, ensuring it sits comfortably and doesn’t cause any discomfort or pressure on the surrounding teeth.
• Adaptation period. Like full dentures, partial dentures may require an adaptation period during which you may experience some initial discomfort while speaking or eating. With time, you’ll become more comfortable wearing them.
• Oral hygiene and care. Proper oral hygiene is crucial to maintain the health of your gums and remaining teeth. Your dentist will provide instructions on how to clean and care for your partial dentures.
• Follow-up visits. Regular follow-up appointments are necessary to assess the fit of the partial dentures and make any adjustments or repairs as needed.
