Are there cases where traditional dental veneers are more appropriate than Lumineers? Dr. Mazhari discusses the benefits of Lumineers and cases where dental veneers provide better results.

Although dental veneers and Lumineers are both types of veneers, they differ in that Lumineers are what are called “no-prep” veneers. They require no preparation to the teeth to place the restoration whereas traditional veneers require a small amount of enamel removal for proper placement.

Lumineers is a patented technology made out of a very strong material. They can be placed directly on top of the teeth and are relatively thin. Lumineers provide a seamless fit for patients that have smaller teeth or tilted teeth where traditional veneers would be more difficult to place.

Traditional dental veneers are ideal for cases where teeth are deeply stained and do not respond to a professional teeth whitening.

To create a brighter color, we can layer the teeth with dental veneers to really mask the dark color and instead create a brighter color. With Lumineers, this layering process would be difficult.

While these two systems both provide patients with a way to transform their smiles, Lumineers tend to be more predictable in no-prep cases, and the bonding system is very strong. Their color is resistant to staining, leading to teeth that still look great years later.

However, for teeth that are dark or bulky, traditional veneers would be a better fit. When we’re not able to achieve a natural-looking smile with Lumineers, traditional dental veneers would be the better option.
