What Is a Dental Crown?

Three dental crowns

A dental crown is a restoration designed to repair a large area of damage to a tooth. It gets its name because unlike a traditional filling, it fits over the entire tooth like a cap or hat, allowing you to once again use the tooth as it was intended while blending seamlessly into your smile.

If you have a tooth that has suffered large amounts of decay, a deep crack, or a painful tooth infection, a crown could protect it and prevent the need for extraction.

The Process of Getting a Dental Crown

At Alexandria Dental Health & Smile Studio, we are proud to offer several different types of dental crowns, including lab-made ceramic, zirconia, or all porcelain, and CEREC same day crowns. Dr. Mazhari will be happy to discuss your options with you during your consultation and make recommendations for which material is best for your smile.

To get a dental crown, Dr. Mazhari will first make some impressions of the tooth, so she has a model to base your restoration on. Then, your tooth will be numbed so you remain comfortable, and she will remove the damaged areas of the tooth, reshaping it to accommodate the crown. More impressions will then be taken to ensure the crown fits securely in your smile.

If you are receiving a CEREC crown, your restoration will then be made right here in our office and attached once ready. You’ll be able to leave and immediately begin using it to enjoy a full diet with no downtime. For lab-made crowns, your impressions will be sent offsite to a dental laboratory, and you’ll be scheduled to return in about two weeks to have it attached. In the meantime, you’ll be fitted with a temporary crown to protect and get you used to wearing the permanent dental crown while you wait.

Benefits of Getting a Dental Crown

Failing to protect damaged teeth could result in worsening oral health problems over time. Dental crowns aim to restore severe damage, so your tooth is once again attractive and functional. Dental crowns offer the following incredible benefits:

  • Improved comfort and chewing capabilities.
  • Protection against extraction and severe damage to your natural teeth.
  • Crowns can correct several types of dental flaws at once.
  • Crowns can be customized to match their surrounding teeth, making them virtually undetectable in your smile.
  • Can last up to 15+ years with proper oral hygiene including brushing, flossing, and routine dental checkups and cleanings.
